2009 PFB Annual Meeting Highlights

PA Farm Bureau Focused on Economic and Environmental Challenges

(Hershey) – Pennsylvania Farm Bureau (PFB) President Carl T. Shaffer said farmers are facing numerous economic challenges as they strive to remain viable in a constantly changing and competitive industry.  Shaffer made the comments during the 59th Annual Meeting of the state’s largest farm organization in Hershey, where hundreds of farmers from across the Commonwealth are meeting to debate and adopt policies affecting Pennsylvania agriculture and rural communities.  More

PA Farm Bureau Highest Honor Presented to Former Ag Secretary and PSU Dean

(Hershey) – Pennsylvania Farm Bureau (PFB) presented former State Agriculture Secretary Dennis Wolff and former Dean of Penn State’s College of Agricultural Sciences Robert Steele with Barn Raiser Awards to recognize their many years of public service to the agricultural community during PFB’s 59th Annual Meeting.  The Barn Raiser Award, which is PFB’s highest honor, recognizes individuals who have spent a lifetime in dedicated leadership to the agricultural community.More

Young Farmer & Rancher Achievement Award

(Hershey) – Pennsylvania Farm Bureau (PFB) has selected Michael and Katie Flinchbaugh of York County as the winner of the 2009 Young Farmer and Rancher (YF&R) Achievement Award, during PFB’s 59th Annual Meeting in Hershey.    
     Michael Flinchbaugh is part of a diverse family farm operation near Hellam, York County that involves his parents, a brother and a sister.  The farm includes 1,400 acres of cash grain crops, a contract hog finishing operation and a 20-acre orchard which supplies peaches, apples and other fruit to the family farm market.  More

Young Farmer & Rancher Discussion Meet Award

(Hershey) – A Berks County farmer has been named the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau (PFB) winner of the 2009 Young Farmer and Rancher Discussion Meet at PFB’s 59th Annual Meeting in Hershey.
    Maria Sipler of Mohnton, Berks County was selected the winner of the YF&R Discussion Meet, outperforming seven other discussion meet participants.  Sipler operates an alpaca farm, where wool from the animals is sold for clothing and other material.  Sipler also is the operations manager for four locations of Hoover Inc., a Case I-H dealership.   More

Young Farmer & Rancher Excellence in Ag Award

(Hershey) – Carissa Itle Westrick of Cambria County has been named Pennsylvania Farm Bureau’s winner of the 2009 Young Farmer and Rancher “Excellence in Ag” Award at PFB’s 59th Annual Meeting in Hershey.
    Itle Westrick was selected the winner of the YF&R Excellence in Ag Award after being recognized for her involvement and leadership in agriculture. More

Distinguished Local Affairs Leader Award

(Hershey) – Pennsylvania Farm Bureau (PFB) has selected Harold Ely of Susquehanna County as the 2009 recipient of the Distinguished Local Affairs Leader Award during PFB’s 59th annual meeting in Hershey.
     The award recognizes an outstanding individual county Farm Bureau leader whose local affairs efforts
and activities help solve local problems and improve rural living for county Farm Bureau members.
     “Over his 55 years of involvement in Farm Bureau, Harold has played a vital role in addressing issues that negatively impacted farmers and residents in Susquehanna County.  In addition, Harold has been a major player at the statewide level helping to create projects that have benefitted dairy farmers across Pennsylvania,” said PFB President Carl T. Shaffer.More
