Charlene Shupp Espenshade received the 2006 Young Farmer and Rancher Discussion Meet Award from Caressa Crone, State Young Farmer and Rancher chairperson at the PA Farm Bureau 56th Annual Meeting.
(Hershey) – A Lancaster County farmer and newspaper writer has been named Pennsylvania Farm Bureau’s winner of the 2006 Young Farmer and Rancher Discussion Meet at PFB’s Annual Meeting in Hershey.
Charlene Shupp Espenshade of Bainbridge was selected the winner of the YF&R Discussion Meet, defeating seven other candidates in one of the strongest field of candidates in discussion meet history. “I consider this an amazing accomplishment to be declared the winner among such a strong field of competitors. I’m proud to represent Pennsylvania Farm Bureau at the National Convention in January,” said Charlene Shupp Espenshade.
Espenshade is an agriculture writer and the Special Sections Editor for Lancaster Farming, a weekly farm publication. She also owns a small herd of registered dairy cattle.
The discussion meet contestants were put in situations where they had to analyze agricultural problems and decide on solutions that best met their needs. The discussion meet is designed to help members build communications skills, develop an understanding of important agricultural issues and explore how groups can pool resources to reach a consensus and solve problems.
“The discussion meet is what Farm Bureau is all about, exploring ways to come up with solutions to problems facing agriculture,” added Espenshade.
Espenshade receives a $500 cash award from Dodge, $250 worth of coupons from Choice Hotels, lodging and registration for the 2007 State YF&R Leadership Conference and an expense paid trip to the American Farm Bureau’s Annual Meeting in Salt Lake City, Utah in January.
Several hundred farmers from across the state attended Pennsylvania Farm Bureau’s 56th Annual Meeting at the Hershey Lodge and Convention Center on November 13-15, to set policy for the statewide organization on issues affecting farm and rural families.
Pennsylvania Farm Bureau is a voluntary organization with a membership of more than 40,000 farm and rural families, representing farms of every size and commodity across the Keystone State.
