Excellence in Ag Award

John Flanders, Perry County, received the 2006 Young Farmer and Rancher Excellence in Ag Award from Caressa Crone, State Young Farmer and Rancher chairperson at the PA Farm Bureau 56th Annual Meeting.

(Hershey) – John Flanders of Newport, Perry County has been named Pennsylvania Farm Bureau’s winner of the 2006 Young Farmer and Rancher Excellence in Ag Award at PFB’s Annual Meeting in Hershey.
Flanders was selected the winner of the YF&R Excellence in Ag Award after being recognized for his involvement and leadership in agriculture, even though he does not derive the majority of his income from an agriculture operation.
Flanders is a crop consultant and assists farmers with all aspects of field crop production.  He monitors crop growth for clients throughout the growing season, noting any problems and recommending the proper treatments.
“I try to help farmers improve their operations and meet their goals in any way that I can.  The key to my success as a crop consultant is to help farmers be as successful and efficient as possible.  Many of my clients are also my friends, and I enjoy helping them out during harvest time and with other work on the farm whenever possible,” said Flanders.
Flanders, who serves on the Perry County Board of Directors, is an active member of the Perry County Farm Bureau.  In the future, Flanders would like to start an active YF&R county committee in Perry County.  He believes that attending the PFB Annual Meeting as a delegate is a great way to stay informed with the policies and issues affecting farmers across the state.
As the state winner, Flanders receives a $500 cash award from Dodge, $250 in vouchers at Choice Hotels, a DeWalt drill from Granger, lodging and registration for the 2007 State YF&R Leadership Conference and an expense paid trip to the American Farm Bureau’s Annual Meeting in Salt Lake City, Utah in January.
Several hundred farmers from across the state attended Pennsylvania Farm Bureau’s 56th Annual Meeting at the Hershey Lodge and Convention Center on November 13-15, to set policy for the statewide organization on issues affecting farm and rural families.
Pennsylvania Farm Bureau is a voluntary organization with a membership of more than 40,000 farm and rural families, representing farms of every size and commodity across the Keystone State.
