The strategy behind the National Animal Identification System (NAIS) is the integration of three components premises identification, animal identification, and animal tracking. The program is designed to work as a state, federal and private industry partnership to improve tracking of animal movements across the country. In the event of an animal disease emergency, USDA’s long-term goal is to be able to identify all animals that would have contact with the suspect animal within 48 hours. At present, NAIS is a voluntary program for producers and others involved in animal agriculture.
