Farm Safety and Health Checklist

General Items
______ Are local emergency numbers posted on each phone?
______ Is there at least one fire extinguisher present?
______ Are all stairs in good condition?
______ Are first aid materials available where necessary?
______ Is the necessary personal protective equipment present?
______ Do emergency service providers have directions to your farm?

Farmyard
______ Does the farm driveway entrance provide good visibility?
______ Are there designated play areas for children?
______ Are farm ponds and manure lagoons fenced?
______ Are all family members and workers aware of overhead power line location?
______ Is the yard clear of junk piles?

Shop
______ Is the shop kept tidy?
______ Is there a charged fire extinguisher present?
______ Are grinders and table saws properly shielded?
______ Is the necessary personal protective equipment present?
______ Are all electric power cords in good condition?


Farm Machinery
______ Do you forbid riders on all farm equipment?
______ Is the power take off (PTQ) shaft guarded on all pieces of equipment?
______ Is there a slow moving vehicle (SMV) emblem mounted on pieces of farm
equipment that travel on public roads?
______ Is the power always turned off before unclogging machinery?
______ Do all operators of farm equipment receive safety training?


Tractors
______ Are all tractors equipped with rollover protection?
______ Is there a slow moving vehicle (SMV) emblem mounted on all tractors that travel on public roads?
______ Is the power take off (FF0) master shield present on all tractors?
______ Does your farm have a "no rider" policy? Do you forbid children to play on or near tractors?


Pesticides
______ Is there a warning sign posted at the storage entrance?
______ Are all pesticides stored in their original containers?
______ Is the necessary personal protective equipment (PPE) available?
______ Is the storage area kept locked?
______ Are pesticides the only items in the storage area?


Feed Storage
______ Do all feed storage ladders end at least 7 feet off the ground?
______ Are all appropriate warning signs in place? Can you lockout the power supply on all loading mechanisms?
______ Are hay chutes guarded in the hay mow?
______ Do you wear a dust mask when working in dusty conditions?


Animal Facilities
______ Are all barn chemicals kept in a storage area, and out of the reach of children?
______ Are pens, gates, fences, and animal handling chutes sturdy?
______ Is equipment properly shielded?
______ Is all manure handling equipment properly guarded?
______ Are all walking surfaces in good condition?
