Farm Bureaus from across the Commonwealth celebrate Food Check-Out Day. This is the day, usually occurring in the beginning of February, when the average American earns enough disposable income to pay for his or her family’s food supply for an entire year. This day is also meant to raise awareness that, thanks to farmers, we have a safe and affordable food supply readily available in the United States. Thanks to the hard work of farmers, U.S. consumers spend just under 10% of their disposable annual income on food.
Under the direction of the Farm Bureau Women’s Leadership Committee, Food Check-Out Day is celebrated by Farm Bureau members from across the state by collecting food, money and other needed items for Pennsylvania’s Ronald McDonald Houses or local food banks. Every participating county conducts their collection drive differently, but some examples of events include: collection boxes at area supermarkets and schools; coin collections at schools and churches; bake sales, and 4-H and FFA fundraisers. Then, on Food Check-out Day all of the collected items and cash are presented to the Ronald McDonald Houses in Philadelphia, Hershey, Danville, Scranton and Pittsburgh, or to a local food bank.
For additional information on donating to this wonderful event, please contact your county’s Farm Bureau or call Brynn Kepler, Community Outreach Director, at 717-761-2740 or email.
