Agricultural Acts

Land-grant Universities - Institutions, including state colleges and universities including Tuskegee University, eligible to receive Federal funds. Created by the Morrill Acts of 1862, and amended in 1890, (to include all black Land-Grant colleges). Land Grant Universities were begun to encourage practical education in agriculture, homemaking and mechanical arts.
LC50 Values - The concentration of a pollutant in test waters that is lethal to 50% of the test organisms during continuous exposure for a specified period of time.
Leeching - The process of removal of soluble materials by the passage of water through soil.
Legumes - A family of plants that includes valuable food and forage species such as peas, beans, soybeans, peanuts, clovers, alfalfas, and sweet clover. Legumes convert nitrogen from the air to nitrates in the soil through a process known as nitrogen fixation. Many of these species are used as cover crops and are plowed under for soil improvement.
LISA - Low-Input Sustainable Agriculture (LISA) is an alternative method of agriculture that reduces the application of purchased inputs such as fertilizer, pesticides, and herbicides. Methods include crop rotation, mechanical cultivation to control weeds, integrated pest management strategies, application of livestock manures, municipal sludge, and compost for fertilizer and over seeding of legumes into maturing fields of grain crops.
Loan Rate - The price per unit (bushel, bale, pound) at which the government will provide loans to farmers to enable them to hold their crops for later sale
