Agricultural Acts

Sediment - Soils or other surface materials transported by surface water as a product of erosion.
Set-aside -The acreage a farmer must devote to soil conserving uses (such as grasses, legumes, and smaller grain that is not allowed to mature), in order to be eligible for production adjustment payment and price-support loans and purchases.
Silage - Prepared by chopping green forage (grass, legumes, field corn, etc) into an airtight chamber, where it is compressed to exclude air and undergoes an acid fermentation that retards spoilage. Silage contains about 65 percent moisture.
Silvaculture - A branch of forestry dealing with the development and care of timber.
SMV - A red triangular-shaped sign that is attached to the rear of a farm vehicle indicating that the vehicle is a "slow-moving vehicle".
Sodbuster - A determination authorized by the Food Security Act of 1985, made under the conservation compliance program to identify which soils are considered "highly erodible" and may not be tilled. If such grassland or woodland is used for crop production without appropriate conservation measures, producers may lose eligibility for participation in many USDA programs.
Solids (non-fat) The solids in milk other than milk fat: protein, lactose and minerals. Milk solids may be added to low fat milk to enhance the flavor.
Somatic Cell - Body cells that are associated with inflammation of the udder (mastitis) of dairy cows.
Sow - Female swine having produced one or more litters
Standards - Levels of quality.  AMS grading is based on standards, and standards are based on measurable characteristics that describe the quality and value of the product.  Standards for each product describe the entire range of quality for a product, and the number of grades various by commodity.  There are eight grades for beef and three each for chickens, eggs, butter, and turkeys.  On the other hand, there are 37 classes for cotton, and more than 300 fruit, vegetable and specialty product standards.
Sustainable Agriculture - An integrated system of farming that will, over the long term, satisfy food and fiber needs, enhance environmental quality, make the most efficient use of resources, sustain the economic viability of farm operations and enhance the quality of life.
Swampbuster - A determination made under the conservation compliance program as to which soils are considered "wetlands" and may not be tilled.
